
Stopping an innovation project is still innovation!
The decision to stop an innovation project is an uncomfortable one. What is at stake goes beyond the rationale for the decision and the consequences for project team members. And, if it is a major project, it may impact the company’s history. This decision is much more than a one-off judgement developed by management. It is a moment of truth. The way it is made and communicated sheds light on the state of the innovation culture within the organisation.
In this paper, I explain why the decision to stop an innovation project is a difficult one. Yet behind it there are also positive things. When a company is striving to strengthen its innovation culture, certain actions should be avoided in favour of the good practices we propose. The termination of an innovation project can be experienced in a less dramatic way. This is the case within an organisation that develops a working environment that enables innovation and initiatives.
